Health promoting hospitals and trusts

The NHS Executive in the SE Region commissioned a project to develop Health Promoting Hospitals and Trusts. The project is based on the work already developed and evaluated by the Wessex Institute for Health Research and Development in the former SW Region, and consists of an audit tool, and peer review process. This work is endorsed by the English Health Promoting Hospitals and Trusts Network, and will assist Trusts in their development as a Health Promoting Hospital / Trust.

This practical tool will assist organisations with the implementation of ‘Our Healthier Nation’, as the elements in the tool cover all of today’s NHS quality agenda. It fits in with the frameworks of clinical governance, the new Human Resources strategy and the Health Improvement Programmes, by using a total organisation approach to each of these elements.

Customer Care
Healthy Workplaces
Facilities Management and Environmental Issues
Community Involvement and Partnerships for Health
Clinical Audit and Effectiveness

A peer review and simple report follows the organisation’s self audit process.

This provides an objective assessment of the audit findings, and a measurable baseline for growth and development. The report can also be used to provide a lever internally for growth. The report is shaped around the six areas, and points for consideration are easily identified for further developmental work.

Peer review also enables the sharing of good practice.
