The project’s aims This project was set up to help promotion quality standards for Care Homes that address a total organisational approach to quality. By teasing out the key standards applicable for care homes, the process undertaken by the homes helps to raise all standards, and thus the overall quality of care provided by the homes. Further enhancement of quality is also achieved by the sharing of ‘good practice’. The standards developed focus on: The maintenance of good practice, The promotion of well being, for staff, clients and visitors to the care home, The demonstration of partnerships developed in the community. The tool developed is based on the Promoting Hospitals / Trusts ‘Self assessment and peer review toolkit’ in the South and West NHS Region. The project group agreed to adopt the broad themes and process already developed for this tool, as they felt that it was also applicable to care homes. There are six sections : Management Issues, Customer Care, Workplaces , Hotel Services and Environmental Issues, Community and Alliances, Clinical Audit and Effectiveness. In each of the sections there are criteria and attached guidelines for a basic and advanced level of achievement. There is also a scoring system for three levels of accreditation. Promoting Hospitals and trusts.

The NHS Executive in the SE Region commissioned a project to develop Hospitals and Trusts. The project is based on the work already produced and evaluated by the Wessex Institute for Research and Consultants in the former SW Region, and consists of an audit tool, and peer review process. This work is endorsed by the English Hospitals and Trusts Network, and will assist Trusts in their work as a Promoting Hospitals / Trusts. This practical tool will assist organisations as the elements in the tool cover all of today’s NHS quality agenda. It fits in with the frameworks of clinical governance, the new Human Resources strategy and the Improvement Programmes, by using a total organisation approach to each of these elements.
